A restaurant in East Gwillimbury was charged and a Markham restaurant temporarily closed by York Region Public Health inspectors last week.

Milestones, at 18162 Yonge St. in East Gwillimbury, was charged Jan. 15 for failing to provide handwashing stations with adequate supplies and not providing a thermometer in hot holding equipment, according to a York Region public health inspection report.

The report showed that Milestones also failed to maintain its ventilation system, as well as failed to keep its washroom facility sanitary and equipped with adequate supplies.

Public health inspectors provided food handler education on-site during last Wednesday’s inspection, as well as ordered a re-inspection.

Re-inspection was held two days later on Jan. 17, where the restaurant was again found to be not in compliance with maintaining its ventilation system to ensure elimination of odours, fumes, vapours, smoke and excessive heat. Additional food handler education was provided and a proof of public health sign was posted.

Further re-inspection was not ordered by health inspectors.

Yasaman Kebab, at 7181 Yonge St. in Markham, was ordered an HPPA closure order on Jan. 13 for not maintaining its food premises in a manner that permits adverse effects on food. The restaurant was also charged with failing to provide hot and cold water under pressure.

On Jan. 16, food handler education was provided on-site, and the restaurant was re-opened. On the same day, Yasaman Kebab was charged for failing to ensure the presence of a certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation. Additional education was provided and a proof of public health sign was posted.

York Region Public Health states the inspection report represents the condition of the restaurants at the date and time of the inspection only and does not guarantee or warrant the condition of the food premises at any other time.
