York Region is reminding residents to slow down and brace themselves for the winter storm about to hit the area tonight.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm advisory Feb. 12, with the total snowfall in northern York Region expected to range from 20 to 40 centimetres, with poor visibility in heavy snow. Southern cities in York Region may experience more than 15 centimetres of snow and a risk of freezing rain.

"The Regional Municipality of York reminds residents to slow down and give yourself extra time and space going to your destinations when driving in poor weather," the region said.

York Region maintains approximately 1,200 kilometres of roadways across all nine cities, including snow plowing, removal, sanding, salting and use of salt brine. Lower-tier municipalities do still monitor their own roads as well.

The region said it monitors road conditions 24-hours a day "to ensure roads are safe and passable in winter conditions." The region uses a road weather information system to track rain, snow and ice and GPS tracking to maximize winter maintenance.

"In addition, patrol vehicles are equipped with sensors to gauge the temperature of the road surface to better identify when roads may need to be treated," the region said.

Snowplow trucks are also equipped with electronic spreader controls to ensure the right amount of anti-ice materials are released at the right time and place, "minimizing impacts of salt to the environment."

The region said motorists should take precautions, including staying off roads if possible, giving yourself extra time, clearing snow and ice from your vehicle, carrying a roadside emergency kit and slowing down and respecting pedestrians. Pedestrians should also make sure to be visible and be seen.

The region also said to be sure to respect snowplows and not follow them too closely. Only pass snow removal vehicles when a safe passing area is available, the lane is clear of snow, and when you can leave plenty of space. You should also not travel beside a snowplow, as they can shift sideways after removing snow drifts.
