Portions of Queen Street near Main Street South will be closed in Newmarket during the day this week as work commences to move hydro poles across the railway tracks.
Newmarket-Tay Power is moving the electrical lines and poles to facilitate Metrolinx’s GO expansion program. The work will require power outages affecting 164 customers during the daytime Aug. 16 to 18, as well as street closures.
“Work is progressing on schedule to replace four hydro poles on Queen Street as part of the Metrolinx GO Expansion,” the utility provider said in an update today. “We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.”
The effort is for Metrolinx’s electrification, as it pushes to bring all-day, 15-minute service to more of its GO train lines.
The installation will close Queen Street between Robertson Place and Concession Street Aug. 15 to 18, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. There will be no road access during these times, with traffic detoured via Main Street, Water Street and Prospect Street.
The power outages for 164 customers will go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug 16 to 18. There is also an alternate outage date of Aug. 22 if the work is not completed on time.
NT power offered several tips for those experiencing the outage, including keeping refrigerators and freezers closed, unplugging equipment, and preparing a cooler or gel packs for frequently used items.
Contractor K-Line Maintenance and Construction Ltd. is doing the project, with work scheduled to run until Aug. 29.
