The Ontario government is putting up for sale a portion of the property housing Service Ontario and the OPP detachment in Aurora for a future long-term care home.
Selling a piece of land at 50-100 Bloomington Rd. is the first step toward opening a modern 128-bed facility in Aurora, according to the province.
"The portion of the site being sold does not encompass either Service Ontario or the OPP detachment and both will stay at the current locations," according to Ministry of Long-term Care spokesperson Rob McMahon.
The existing building, on the west side of Yonge Street at Bloomington, was originally the Christian Brothers' De La Salle College and includes the Pine Ridge Trail (Monk’s Walk). The Town of Aurora designated the property of cultural heritage value in May 2019.
Additional "surplus properties" are being sold in Vaughan and Oakville with the requirement that long-term care homes be built on portions of the land.
A 256 long-term care bed facility is slated for 7231 Martin Grove Rd. in Woodbridge, and a 512 long-term care bed facility at 165 Dundas St. West in Oakville.
Developing long-term care homes on surplus government lands will help address barriers often faced by long-term care operators, such as the limited supply of available land, particularly in urban areas, according to a news release.
The new long-term care homes, amounting to nearly 900 beds in total, will help deliver on the government's commitment to creating 30,000 beds over 10 years.
