Power outages, downed branches hit Newmarket during Tuesday thunderstorm

York Regional Police received multiple calls for driving hazards but no collisions reported in town

Power outages and driving hazards plagued Newmarket following the severe storm that hit in the evening of Sept. 7.

Residents noticed the skies clouding over as the storm moved in around 6:45 p.m. bringing wind, thunder and lighting, rain, and hail.

Environment Canada issued a severe storm warning for York Region, warning of the possibility of wind gusting up to 100 km/h, large hail up to 2 cm, and heavy rainfall that makes driving treacherous.

Around 7:40 p.m. Newmarket-Tay Power and Distribution posted on Twitter that there were large outages in both central and east Newmarket.

They later reported that crews found a large branch across a 44kV feeder and another tree on the lines on Patterson Street that were believed to be causing the outages.

At 8:38 p.m., the utility reported “all power has been restored to the numerous outages that occurred in the Newmarket area, as a result of the severe thunderstorms that were passing through the area.”

In local Facebook groups, residents reported power outages all across town and also shared photographs of branches and small debris on their properties, hail on their patios and photos from around town, including one showing a large tree branch down on D’Arcy Street by St. Paul’s Anglican Church.

York Regional Police Const. Laura Nicolle said that during the storm multiple reports of driving hazards, lights out and tree debris in the road were received for Newmarket.

However, she said there was not a single collision reported to YRP at the time of the storm.
