Newmarket has grown by more than four per cent since 2016, according to new Canadian census data released this month.

In 2021, the population was 87,942, according to the census. This is an increase of more than 3,000 people or 4.4 per cent from the previous census in 2016 when the population of Newmarket was 84,224.

This is the 31st largest population in Ontario and the 70th largest population in all of Canada.

The land area of Newmarket is 38.5 square kilometres and the population density is about 2,284.1 people per square kilometre.

The census also found there are 31,239 private dwellings in Newmarket, up 6.6 per cent since 2016.

The neighbouring town of East Gwillimbury was named the fastest growing municipality in all of Canada, with the population increasing by 44.4 per cent from 23,991 in 2016 to 34,637 in 2021. Statistics Canada said this is evidence of ongoing urban spread in the Toronto area.

While it is the fastest growing, East Gwillimbury is the second smallest town by population in all of York Region. Markham has the largest population in the region with 338,802 people — the seventh largest in Ontario. It is followed directly by Vaughan, ranked eighth in Ontario, with a population of 323,103.

Richmond Hill is the next largest municipality in the region with 202,022 people, the 12th largest in the province. Then Newmarket is the next largest, followed closely by Aurora with a population of 62,057, which is the 39th largest in Ontario. Whitchurch-Stouffville is 43rd in Ontario with a population of 49,864.
