Newmarket to begin paving downtown gravel parking lot

Some closures will be required during the construction work near Riverwalk Commons March 24 to June 7

One hundred and fifty paved parking spots are coming to downtown Newmarket, with the town beginning works on the Riverwalk Commons gravel lot starting March 24.

Work will be underway on the gravel lot, which was added to the area after the demolition of the former Newmarket Tennis Club facility, from March 24 to June 7. The town will also be making improvements to the existing paved lot there as well.

“The town strategically timed this construction work to coincide with the end of the current Metrolinx construction at Timothy Street and Doug Duncan Drive (wrapping up by March 21) and to be completed in time for the busy downtown patio season and vibrant summer events lineup,” the municipality said in a news release.

There will be some parking space closures while the construction is underway. When construction begins, the gravel area located on the north end will be closed, but the existing paved P3 lot will remain open during the first phase of construction for approximately five weeks.

During the second and final phase of work, approximately 225 parking spaces will be available in the entire P3 lot for use, with the town making other improvements such as repaving, curb repairs and adding sidewalks.

The town added the gravel lot to the area last year in a bid to increase parking capacity in the busy downtown core, with parking being a persistent concern in the area.

The town said during the closures, parking is still available in nearby areas like Fairy Lake, Lions Park, Cane Parkway and All Our Kids Park.
