The Newmarket Public Library is launching kiosks that will allow you to check out books at other public facilities in the community.
The library is launching the kiosks at the Magna Centre and Ray Twinney Recreation Complex starting Feb. 20. The kiosks will allow library members to borrow and return books while visiting the facilities, via machines that will feature a selection of more than 150 books.
“We are so excited to be able to provide the community with the convenience of accessing Library books at busy community hubs,” library CEO Tracy Munusami said in a news release. “The kiosks broaden the reach of our services and provide another way for people to engage with the library.”
The library began budgeting for the machines last year, allotting about $95,000 at the time. Similar machines have appeared in nearby communities like Barrie and Vaughan, enabling more locations where residents can access library books.
The kiosks, dubbed Library on the Go, will allow people to grab a book at the facilities, whether after a workout or for a parent to entertain a child, the library said. The collections will feature a variety of books for people of all ages.
The machines will work by scanning your library card, opening the door, and removing the book you want. When you close the door, the kiosk will automatically check out a book and print a receipt. Returning a book works the same way, scanning a card, opening the door, and putting the book back on the shelf.
