The new fitness facility at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex is opening March 18.

Those aiming to stay active in Newmarket will soon have a new option as the municipality opens a brand-new fitness centre at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex March 18.

The Town of Newmarket has completed a conversion of a multipurpose room in the facility for a fitness centre, now ready to open. With membership accessible through the town’s Recpass system, the town has said the facility should offer something similar to the popular fitness facilities at the Magna Centre.

“Newmarket’s new fitness centre offers convenient access to recreation, providing even more opportunities to stay active,” the municipality said on social media March 15.

Council approved the move back in June, with a projected cost of about $135,000, with staff estimating it could be more than offset by a “conservative” 1,200-member estimate.

“Given that the financial impact will be positive and the service to our community will be enhanced, this is an opportune time to proceed with the addition of a fitness centre,” the staff report said.

Councillors spoke positively about the proposal, noting that it would offer a location more convenient than the Magna Centre for many residents.

The municipal website notes that the Ray Twinney will be running group fitness and aqua fitness classes for adults and teenagers, just as in the Magna Centre. Membership to get unlimited access is available for a monthly adult fee of $37.50, $27.50 for youth and children, or $62.50 for a household.

Passes are available at newmarket.ca/recpass or the town’s customer service kiosks.

The town will also be holding a grand opening celebration the following week, March 25 at 5 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting, refreshments and prizes.
