An occupant of a Knapton Drive home in Newmarket was admitted to hospital after an early morning fire yesterday caused by an unattended candle.

Animal Control was called to the scene as a number of cats in the home died of smoke inhalation.

Six Central York Fire Services (CYFS) trucks were dispatched to the fire at 12:52 a.m. Dec. 11, where the first officer reported smoke coming from the second floor.

The fire was quickly extinguished, although the firefighters had difficulty accessing the fire "due to excessive room contents", according to the CYFS incident report.

CYFS provides the following advisory when using candles:
  • Secure candles in a sturdy holder, in a location where they can't be knocked over
  • Make sure all lit candles are kept out of reach of children and pets
  • Keep all combustible materials, including decorative items, away from lit candles
  • Always blow out candles before leaving the room
