Newmarket group demonstrates at Toronto climate strike (7 photos)

Local climate action group Drawdown Newmarket-Aurora joined thousands from across the GTA to march at Queen's Park

Local climate action group Drawdown Newmarket-Aurora joined thousands of demonstrators at the Toronto climate strike at Queen's Park Friday, one of the many protests taking place in towns and cities across the country.

"The crowds were huge. I think the media estimates were way low, as I was at the Women’s March post Trump — which was the biggest I’d seen — and this was even bigger," said group co-founder and Newmarket resident Fran Bazos. "The best part was to see so many young people totally engaged and wanting to make a positive difference to influence political change."

Bazos said her grandson, Harry, accompanied her for the historic event.

The local Drawdown chapter marched under the Toronto Drawdown banner, along with Drawdown chapter members from across the GTA, Bazos added.

"Those of us from the various Drawdown groups are very optimistic that the tide is finally turning and that governments in Canada will have to follow the will of the people and take decisive action against climate change to prevent a climate catastrophe," said Bazos, who added further encouragement is the fact that the climate change issue is a top concern in the 2019 federal election.
