Diabetes Canada is asking residents of Newmarket to drive up and donate their gently used clothing and small household items starting this weekend, May 4 and 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Diabetes Canada Clothing Collection Centre at 16600 Bayview Ave. every weekend, all summer long.

This will help the more than 11.9 million Canadians with prediabetes and diabetes, the charity said in a news release.

Last year, during the Drive Up and Donate initiative, Canadians donated more than 94,000 pounds of textiles and household items, which were diverted from landfill. This year Diabetes Canada hopes to reach their goal of collecting one million pounds.

"The people of Newmarket are always generous toward our charitable cause," the charity said.

“With so many people willing to declutter and generously donate their gently used items to Diabetes Canada, there are now more locations and opportunities to participate,” said Sean Shannon, president and CEO of National Diabetes Trust. “We are grateful that Canadians continue to support Diabetes Canada and are so enthusiastic about the Drive Up and Donate initiative. These nationwide clothing donation collection events are an easy and great way to give back to your community and help reduce textiles and small household items going to landfills.”

Since Diabetes Canada started the annual Drive Up and Donate event in 2020, nearly 500,000 pounds have been collected and diverted from landfills across Canada.

Your donations help fund research, send kids with Type 1 to D-Camps and help to keep items out of landfill. To learn more, including what small household items can be donated, visit declutterfordiabetes.ca.
