One of the hottest trends at events, parties, festivals and weddings has arrived here.
Newmarket resident Katie Henderson is bringing a sparkle to local events with her newly launched business, GlitterMe Bar.
The entrepreneur first started her business in the United Kingdom — where she’s from — in 2019 after realizing the concept was popular there.
“I just thought why not, why not have a go? Because they’re great for kids parties, hen parties, wedding receptions, baby showers, festivals, they’re huge for festivals,” she said.
While the name says 'bar', it has nothing to do with alcohol. Henderson sets up her glitter station at events and parties and puts glitter on faces and bodies to add some shine and glamour.
“It’s just a bit fun. I just think, festival wise, it adds a bit of sparkle for pictures,” she said.
The glitter she uses is biodegradable, cruelty free, vegan, and made from plants.
Despite the reputation of glitter being messy, she also said her process is actually quite clean.
“You’ll get minimal droppage,” she said. “I’ve never been to an event where I’ve had to sweep the floor.”
Henderson, who used to paint kids’ faces at events and parties as a job, brought the business to the Newmarket area when she moved here in July 2020.
While the concept is popular in the U.K., she believes GlitterMe Bar is the only business of its kind in Canada.
However, as an events-based business, she said the pandemic has been challenging.
“It’s been a little tough, obviously, because we haven’t been able to do anything yet,” she said.
She is hoping to change that with a spot at Stouffville’s Pop Up Shoppe at 6397 Main St. this weekend, Aug. 6 to 8.
She said she’ll set up the glitter bar so people can get an idea of what it would look like at an event, offering a sample of her work, but mostly spreading the word about what she does.
As things open up and events return, she hopes her business will take off.
“I see the glitter bar being a huge success,” she said. “I see it being a huge, huge thing and people are going to love it.”
