Markham announces Main Street Unionville restoration.

The City of Markham is kicking off an exciting new chapter with the restoration of Main Street Unionville.

Just the facts:

1. Project description — This ambitious project, which stretches from the train tracks to just north of Carlton Road, will include essential infrastructure upgrades. These improvements will feature new water mains and storm sewers, along with modern sidewalks, boulevards, road surfaces and a new street light system extending from Highway 7 to Carlton Road, including Carlton Road itself and the East Lane.

2. Upcoming construction — The restoration will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, focusing on Carlton Road and the East Lane, began in August and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The second phase, targeting Main Street, will start in the spring of 2025 and aims to wrap up by the end of that year.

3. Community impact — In keeping with the city’s vision to enhance this heritage village, the project aims to balance the need for modernization with the preservation of its historic character.

Throughout the restoration, all shops and eateries will remain open, with clear signage and regular updates to keep everyone informed.
