Internationally acclaimed Brooklyn, N.Y. jazz trumpet player Brownman Ali — a recent Juno Award nominee for Jazz Album of the Year — returns to Ontario delivering modern electric jazz across a three-city mini-tour — including Newmarket — colliding Black American music art forms such as funk, soul, R&B, hip-hop, drum ’n’ bass with classic jazz language.
“The trio folds aspects of Black American music into a chordless jazz framework,” states Brownman in a news release. “When we’re not playing originals, we often take classic standards from the ’30s through the ’50s and re-imagine them as if they were written today and being produced by, say, DJ Premier or Kanye West. The end result is something that hopefully sounds relevant in today’s musical paradigm, but still resonates with the history and lineage of the jazz tradition. And yep, you’ll hear a lot of Miles Davis’s influence in that resulting sound.”
The trio features Ali, heralded by NYC's Village Voice as “Canada’s pre-eminent jazz trumpet player,” and features Josh Cohen on bass, first-place winner of the NAMM 2020 PJB Solo Bass Competition, and 22-year old Toronto drumset phenom Adam Mansfield.
The Newmarket concert will take place Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at Old Flame Brewing Co., 140 Main St. S. Tickets are available here.
