Hillcrest Mall marks 50th anniversary with community celebration

Richmond Hill mall is hosting birthday activities, a back-to-school fundraising initiative and will make a $5,000 contribution to Sandgate Women’s Shelter in York Region

Hillcrest Mall is celebrating 50 years as a community gathering destination in Richmond Hill.

Since opening its doors in 1974, generations of area residents have come to the mall for retail, entertainment and community engagement. To commemorate this anniversary, the mall will host birthday activities, a back-to-school fundraising initiative and make a $5,000 contribution to Sandgate Women’s Shelter in York Region.

“In 1974, we opened as the largest mall north of metro Toronto and for the past 50 years, Hillcrest Mall has stood as a cornerstone of Richmond Hill, evolving and growing alongside the city. Since then, we’ve seen tremendous growth including an HBC renovation and redevelopments of our south and north wings, bringing popular brands like H&M, Indigo and Sporting Life closer to our community,” Ryan Da Silva, Hillcrest Mall’s director and general manager, said in a news release.

Hillcrest Mall will be decked out with gallery timeline walls, a large gold 50 installation and a Rose Photo Wall paying homage to Richmond Hill’s reputation as the rose capital of Canada. Until Aug. 25, donations of backpacks filled with supplies, clothing and toiletries will be colleced near the guest experience desk to help the families of Sandgate Women's Shelter.

Shoppers can take part in the week-long birthday celebrations in Centre Court to mark the occasion:

  • Aug. 21, 1 to 5 p.m.: In partnership with the Richmond Hill Public Library, participate in birthday-themed arts and crafts, face painting, and colouring an interactive mural by local artist Ghazaleh Rastgar.
  • Aug. 22, 1 to 5 p.m.: Celebrate with 50th anniversary-themed games, exciting limited edition merchandise from Marry Me Mochi and Blooming Cotton Candy, a photobooth, and a special nod to Hillcrest Mall’s 1974 rose giveaway while supplies last.
  • Friday Aug. 23 to Sunday Aug. 25: Hillcrest Mall presents a back-to-school market hosted by Building Community Inc, featuring local vendors to meet all your back-to-school needs.
