The Town of Newmarket is giving residents a chance to get rid of unwanted electronics as part of this week's Waste Reduction Week campaign.

The town is hosting a free electronics recycling event at its operations centre this Saturday, Oct. 26. The drive-thru, drop-off event will allow residents to dispose of their electronics properly.

“Waste Reduction Week is a great reminder that we can all do more to protect the environment, save energy and consider more sustainable living choices,” Mayor John Taylor said in a news release.

The annual week is celebrated across the country as a way to engage communities around recycling. At last year’s Newmarket recycling event, Taylor said they were able to divert 18,063 pounds of electronic items and 828 pounds of batteries from landfill.

The event will take place at the operations centre at 1275 Maple Hill Crt. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items accepted include computers, printers, televisions, digital media, cameras, electronic musical instruments, radios, speakers and related accessories. Used household batteries will also be accepted.

Items not accepted include small and large appliances, power tools, lawnmowers, toys, motor vehicles, lightbulbs, fans, vacuum cleaners and DVDs, blue-rays and VHS tapes.

The town is also having a sale on blue boxes, green bins and kitchen catchers. Blue boxes are available at $10.50 (normally $15.50), green bins at $19.60 (normally $29) and kitchen catchers for $5.60 (normally $8.50). Orders can be made at newmarket.perfectmind.com or by calling 905-895-5193.

“Let’s continue to do more and ensure all items are disposed of and recycled properly and kept out of landfills,” Taylor said.
