The Town of Newmarket is offering places to cool off in the wake of an Environment Canada heat warning issued for the area.
The heat warning throughout York Region and the GTA is forecast to last over the next two to three days, with temperatures in the low 30Cs possible.
The municipality said its facilities are available to offer an escape from the heat, including the Magna Centre, public library and indoor and outdoor pools.
The facilities are available during normal hours of operation:
- Magna Centre, 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 800 Mulock Dr.
- Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 100 Eagle St. W.
- The Newmarket Public Library, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at 474 Park Ave.
Pools are available at the Magna Centre and Ray Twinney Recreation Complex during drop-in times, as is the Gorman Outdoor Pool at 242 D’Arcy St. Drop-in times are available on the town website.
The town also offers several spray pads, including the water feature at Riverwalk Commons from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 200 Doug Duncan Dr. Other spray pads are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., including the Rogers Spray Pad (170 London Rd.), the Frank Stronach Spray Pad (500 Memorial Cir.) and the Dr. Margaret Arkinstall Spray Pad (Sawmill Valley Drive).
The town said the best defence against heat-related illness is prevention.
“Take precautions when going outdoors, limit heat exposure if possible and stay hydrated,” the municipality said.
