A house on Bristol Road in Newmarket was destroyed in a fire that started in the garage last night.
When Central York Fire Services arrived at about 6 p.m. July 13, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and had spread to the attic of the home, according to a CYFS incident report.
Three occupants of the home were safely evacuated before crews arrived.
Crews initially entered the home to attack the fire from the interior, but due to the rapid spread and deteriorating conditions, firefighters had to exit the dwelling and continue the extinguish the fire from the exterior.
The occupants have been displaced from the home, as well as the residents of the neighbouring home due to power and heat damage, CYFS said.
The cause of fire remains undetermined.
Central York Fire Services deployed four fire trucks, one command vehicle and one elevated device to the scene, including two chief officers and 23 firefighters to address the fire.
Central York Fire Services is asking residents to be mindful of garage fires because they may not be detected by the mandatory alarms inside the home.
Ryan Schell, chief fire prevention officer, recommends residents consider installing a heat alarm in garages and kitchens. Officer Schell explains that these devices are like smoke alarms, except instead of detecting smoke, they detect heat.
