It’s the last official day of summer and some of you may be thinking about getting your fireplace ready for those chilly fall nights to come.

Central York Fire Services hopes you’ll remember this: Look, listen, learn. Be aware, fire can happen anywhere.

The regional first responders kick off Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7 to 13, with an open house tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fire Station 4-4, 1344 Wellington St. E. in Aurora. Parking is available at the Stronach Recreation Complex, 1400 Wellington St. E. A shuttle service will be provided.

Guests can take part in fire safety games, watch vehicle rescue demonstrations, take a ride on the Tim Hortons Express Train, tour fire trucks, do arts and crafts and meet everyone’s favourite mascot, Sparky the fire dog. A barbecue gets underway later in the afternoon.

This year’s fire prevention theme is a warning that fire can happen anywhere. Information is provided on ways you can reduce the risk and how to be prepared if a fire breaks out.

“Look for places fire can start, listen for the sound of the smoke alarm, learn two ways out of each room,” states the media release.

A second open house is set for Newmarket on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fire Station 4-1, 984 Gorham St., featuring the same activities above.

Donations will be accepted at the open houses for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of York Region.
