Newmarket resident Christian Wehrli has created a special StoryWalk to honour the memory of his sister, Esther, a teacher who loved storybooks.

Newmarket Public Library is hosting the Fairy Trail Walk for Esther, a kindergarten teacher in Switzerland, on Sunday, June 9.

When visiting her brother in Newmarket, she enjoyed walking the Tom Taylor Trail and spending time at Newmarket Library, a library news release said.

“My idea was to combine the two things Esther loved to do the most when she came to stay with me and create a fundraising event in her memory with all proceeds going toward purchasing children’s books for the library and future StoryWalks in the community,” says Wehrli.

StoryWalks are an outdoor reading activity combining literacy and exercise. Families stroll along, reading a children’s book page by page on signs along a trail in a public park.

The Fairy Trail Walk for Esther will feature the famous children’s book The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, and be located along a trail in Fairy Lake Park.

The Fairy Trail Walk for Esther is on Sunday, June 9, beginning at the Fairy Lake Park Amphitheatre at 1:30. Cost to participate is $25 per person (family of three or more $49). Children can take part in a parade wearing their favourite fairy tale costumes, enjoy watching a balloon artist, and receive a commemorative water bottle.
