Empty Bowls participants pick their pottery at Newmarket's Old Town Hall (9 photos)

The annual event pivoted to a to-go model again this year due to the pandemic

The 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser is well underway with pick-up taking place at the Old Town Hall on Botsford Street.

Every year, the event raises money for Inn From the Cold in Newmarket and Welcoming Arms in Aurora.

As part of the fundraiser Pine Tree Potters Guild, an Aurora-based artisan group, hand-crafts unique bowls for donors to choose from.

In the past they have served gourmet soups from local chefs at a sit-down dinner but due to COVID-19 they have pivoted to a pick-up based model for the second year in a row.

Now, people who purchased tickets are stopping by Newmarket's Old Town Hall where they can choose their own bowl and receive a coupon book for free food and treats from a variety of restaurants throughout Newmarket and Aurora.

Pick-up began on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. and continued on Friday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The final day for bowl selection is today, Saturday, Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All the proceeds from the Empty Bowls event help fight homelessness, hunger and poverty in the area, by supporting two local organizations who help address these issues.

The event is part of a larger movement, held in cities across North America, aimed at combating hunger and homelessness.
