The Town of East Gwillimbury, with partners from Mount Albert Sports Day & Spring Fair, Mount Albert and District Lions Club (Lions) and Tiny Seedlings, celebrated the official opening of the Mount Albert Community Centre Park, located in the heart of Mount Albert along Main Street. This new place has something for everyone, and parkgoers can enjoy the space all year round.

The park redevelopment project, completed in 2020, took eight months to build. The redeveloped park is approximately 6.5 acres, with many amenities, including EG’s largest events pavilion, skate park and scooter zone, new playground structure, four new basketball nets, passive recreational areas, a signature planter display of a 1942 Ford tractor, and additional parking spaces. Park visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the space during the winter months as the basketball court can be flooded to allow for outdoor skating.

“This park is a core amenity in Mount Albert, and the new design of this space will continue to serve the community for many years to come,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “Thank you to Mount Albert residents for providing design input and for supporting the redevelopment of the park, and our thanks to our partners for their financial support.”

Planning for this park began in 2017 and consisted of multiple public engagement sessions to design a park that meets community needs, including the ability to continue to host Mount Albert Sports Day & Spring Fair, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in June. To commemorate this milestone event, Town Council is dedicating a bench located in the park.

Many of the Town’s partners raised funds to support the redevelopment project, which cost $1.5M to complete. The Mount Albert & District Lions raised money through their “Donate a Brick Program,” which supported the skateboard and scooter zone. Bricks that were purchased through that program are laid near the concrete walkway entrance leading into the skate park. The Town also received generous donations from the Mount Albert Sports Day Committee for the events pavilion and from Tiny Seedlings for the new Bamboo playground structure.

Residents are invited to join the Town for its Summer of Parks celebrations throughout EG.
