Visitors to the Rogers Reservoir Conservation Area should be wary of coyotes after several reports of sightings, the Town of East Gwillimbury said.

Take precautions to avoid conflicts or contact with wildlife, the town advises.

If you run into wildlife: be cautious; pick up small children and dogs; never run from or turn your back on a coyote; slowly back away; yell; and carry a flashlight when walking at night.

Further tips to help prevent coyotes from visiting your property are:

  • Keep pet food and water bowls indoors. Food can attract coyotes to your yard;
  • Keep trash cans covered at all times;
  • Put garbage out the morning of collection and not the night before;
  • Do not allow a large amount of wild bird seed to remain on your lawn as it attracts prey for coyotes;
  • Keep pets on leash during walks and indoors at night or enclosed in kennels;
  • Keep cats indoors. Letting cats roam can draw coyotes into the area;
  • Do not leave leftover food, garbage or dog feces in public or private outdoor spaces.

You can report a sighting for tracking purposes, not the removal of wildlife, to Coyote Watch Canada online or by calling 905-931-2610.
