Community shreds in support of Newmarket's food bank (7 photos)

About $1,700 and 500 pounds of food were donated, with lineups of vehicles at times as people waited for their turn to have sensitive documents safely destroyed

A community shredding event was a big hit with about $1,700 and 500 pounds of food donated for the Newmarket Food Pantry just before Thanksgiving.

Andrea Bartley, an investment advisor at Investment Planning Counsel (IPC), organized the event that took place Saturday at their office in downtown Newmarket.

“It was very successful, there was non-stop traffic from 9 till 1,” she said.

The unique fundraiser encouraged people to bring their sensitive documents to be shredded and also make a donation to the Newmarket Food Pantry.

Bartley said she isn’t sure how much paper was shredded, but she was overwhelmed by the generosity of people who came out.

“I was overwhelmed and thankful for the response from the community not only for all their contributions to the Newmarket food bank, but for how excited they were to be able to clear out their old documents,” she said.

Bartley had originally booked a Shred-It truck for the event but said it didn’t turn up, however, they were able to find a quick solution.

“Absolute Destruction and Recycling Corp came through for us last minute,” she said.

Members of the community were happy to get rid of their papers and many said they are hoping she will hold another community shredding event in the future, she added.
