The community is invited to attend York Regional Police's celebration of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination Saturday, March 22 in Markham.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Crystal Fountain Event Space, 60 McDowell Gate, Markham. Admission is free and all are welcome.
This year's event will feature community booths, diverse musical and artistic performances.
"The day is an opportunity for citizens and community partners to join the police service in a celebration of our diversity and a collective effort to eradicate prejudice and all forms of discrimination," a news release said.
Chief Jim MacSween will deliver remarks at 11:30 a.m., followed by cultural performances that include Sakuramai Japanese Yosakoi Dance Group, Tabriz Ensemble, Apple Creek the Achievers Drum Corp, the Taishan School of Martial Arts, Sankalana Cultural Dance Academy, Tony Anthony and the TECO Drum Team.
"It is disappointing that recent global events have led to further division and polarization," said Chief MacSween in the news release. "But I am proud that here at York Regional Police, we remain steadfast in our commitment to breaking down the barriers that divide us, and designing policies, practices and initiatives that promote fairness for everyone."
In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The declaration was intended to increase awareness around the issues of racism and discrimination. Canada became one of the first countries to formally recognize the declaration when it proclaimed the day in 1989.
