Today, The Town of Newmarket is launching a Choose Local campaign just in time for the holiday season. Choose Local has been crafted to encourage residents to support the business community in Newmarket during and post COVID-19 and to help keep dollars circulating through the local economy.
The Choose Local campaign includes an online business directory designed to make choosing local easier this holiday season.
In partnership with the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, the town is also launching a social media contest encouraging the community to share photos of how they are ‘choosing local’ for a chance to win one of three $500 shopping sprees in support of local businesses, an autographed Connor McDavid jersey and more!
“It can be estimated that the average household spends more than $50 per month just on Amazon — that adds up to about $1.5 million a month in Newmarket,” says Mayor John Taylor. ”Over this holiday season, imagine if each of us, before ordering online, stopped and challenged ourselves to find the product locally. Think how much money we could direct to local businesses. If we could keep even half that online spending locally for the next six months that would mean $4.5 million being spent to support our local businesses. Please make the right choice and Choose Local.”
Local businesses serve the community in many ways, including sponsoring sports teams, donating to important causes, employing residents, and purchasing from other Newmarket-based businesses. Many businesses are struggling right now as a result of COVID-19 and the Town is strongly encouraging the entire community to show local businesses some love this holiday season by choosing local.
The Choose Local contest is intended to help raise awareness on social media and to add incentive for the community to shop local this holiday season, as well as to drive traffic to the Choose Local directory.
Steps to enter:
1. Visit the Choose Local directory (newmarket.ca/chooselocaldirectory) to select a business that you’d like to support. Don’t see your favourite business in the directory? Encourage the business to claim the listing here.
2. Take a photo showing how you support that Newmarket business. Get creative and have fun with it!
3. Post a photo of your purchased product, service or activity on Instagram or Twitter, or email [email protected] and be entered into a draw to win one of three $500 Choose Local shopping sprees, an autographed Connor McDavid jersey and one of three $100 Upper Canada Mall gift cards.
Be sure to tag @TownofNewmarket and the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce and use the hashtag #ChooseNewmarket. Remember to also tag the business to inspire others to also support your local favourites. Each social post is one entry. Participants may enter multiple times, with separate posts over the course of the contest.
