The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Aurora/Newmarket is set to celebrate International Women’s Day with a powerful call to action.
Under this year’s theme, Accelerate Action, the organization invites women to a special presentation and luncheon on March 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Trinity United Church in Newmarket.
“This year’s theme resonates deeply,” IWD chair Sandy Esposito said in a release.
“As a member of the boomer generation, I’ve been advocating for women’s rights since the early 1970s. With women making up over half the world's population, we must push harder and faster for gender equality.”
The keynote speaker, Leah Taylor Roy, MP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill and chair of the Women’s Caucus, will share insights from her groundbreaking bipartisan coalition.
Over the past two years, she and five other MPs have been working behind the scenes to expedite the immigration process for Afghanistan’s last female politicians, helping them find safety in Canada.
“Democracy thrives when all voices are heard, yet we are still far from true gender parity in elected office,” says Taylor Roy. “We cannot afford to move backward— when women are at the table, decisions are more inclusive, policies are more effective, and governance better reflects the realities of all people. Achieving equal representation isn’t just about fairness; it’s about building a stronger, more just, and forward-looking democracy.”
Pre-registration is required as there are only 100 tickets available. Contact the IWD committee at [email protected] to register for this free event. Free will donations are most appreciated.
Following the luncheon, attendees will continue CFUW Aurora/Newmarket’s long-standing tradition: a walk down Main Street to the Water Street Bridge, symbolizing unity with women around the world.
“This short walk celebrates solidarity with our sisters around the world. There, we will sing ‘Oh Canada,’” says Shiela Ingle, chair of Community Outreach for CFUW A/N. “In these uncertain times, celebrating Canadian pride is a way to show unity and resilience.”
Once again this year, two Main Street Newmarket female owned and operated shops, Cocoa40 and Olive Oil Co., have invited CFUW members to drop in for some treats after the walk to celebrate the power of women working together.
CFUW Aurora/Newmarket has been marking International Women’s Day for 13 years, including virtual celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization remains committed to advocating for women’s rights and advancing educational opportunities.
