York Regional Police officers are braving frigid waters to raise funds for Special Olympics Ontario.
The force is holding its annual Polar Plunge — which they have been doing since 2013 — on March 24 at the new York Regional Police Association location at 63 Eric T. Smith Way in Aurora.
This will be the first in-person plunge since February 2020.
“For over 35 years, York Regional Police has supported the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Ontario to access their dreams through participation in sport. The Polar Plunge is an excellent opportunity to spend a great night with some athletes while raising money," said Karen Richards, special events supervisor with YRP.
The plunge aims to raise $15,000 with $1,935 already collected, according to the online donation page. All the money raised on the local level will stay in the community and support athletes participating in programs in Georgina, Newmarket, Aurora, Markham and Richmond Hill.
Anyone can register to participate in the polar plunge as long as you're willing to get cold for a cause. To help with warm thoughts, the event theme is A Beach Vacation, and there are prizes for the best costume. There will also be prizes for best individual plunge and best team plunge. The top fundraiser will win a Fitbit Versa 2, presented by Access Storage.
YRP officers and staff will also be taking the plunge, including Chief Jim MacSween. If you want to join him, you can sign up or show your support through donations online.
