Aurora garden tour offers glimpse into neighbours' backyards

Tickets are $15 and there are nine gardens on the June 23 tour hosted by Garden Aurora

Fancy a peek around people’s back gardens? The Aurora garden tour can offer you just that.

Happening on June 23 from noon to 4:30 p.m., the tour is a long-running event organized by Garden Aurora.

“It’s an opportunity to see the backyards of gardens in town,” said Cindy Scythes, a spokesperson for the group. “These are gardens that are maintained by the owners, they’re not landscaped or designed professionally.”

The tour features nine back gardens throughout Aurora.

“The opportunity is to go in and look at people’s lovely gardens and see how they garden in Aurora, because the land is different everywhere, and some of them are very sloped, some of them have wild areas behind them, some of them are in subdivisions.”

The tour tries to encompass gardens of different types, from larger plots to smaller ones in townhouses.

“There’s lots to learn right now in horticulture,” said Scythes.

“Early on, people were just putting in gardens and lawns, and now we’re more focused on native plants, not planting invasive plants, and people can learn about those things from our members if they come and look around at the gardens we’ve chosen.”

Tickets are being sold for $15 at a number of locations, cash only:

  • New Roots Garden Centre in Newmarket
  • Wild Birds Unlimited in Newmarket
  • Replenish General Store in Newmarket
  • Petal Me Sugar Florist in Aurora
  • Royal Rose Gallery in Aurora

They are also being sold at Garden Aurora’s booth at the Aurora Farmers' Market on June 15 and 22.

Tickets can be bought the day of the event at Garden #1, which is located at 43 Whispering Pine Trail, from noon onwards.

The event is taking place June 23, rain or shine.

All funds raised from ticket sales go toward Garden Aurora’s programming.
