York Region Public Health inspectors laid charges at three Asian restaurants — and ordered one to close temporarily — as well as a supermarket last week.
Hakka Legend Asian Cuisine at 86-87 - 7393 Markham Rd. in Markham was ordered to temporarily close following an inspection April 13.
The inspection report said it failed to protect against the breeding of pests, and failed to ensure the ceilings were in good repair and that the premises are in a clean and sanitary condition.
The restaurant was ordered to close for being maintained in a manner permitting rodent/pest infestation, the report states.
The restaurant was re-inspected April 15 and found to be satisfactory with no further action required.
Also in Markham, Providential 9 at 8425 Woodbine Ave. was inspected on April 6 and was found not in compliance of a number of items, including the food handler failing to wash hands, failing to provide handwashing stations with adequate supplies, failing to ensure equipment surfaces are cleaned, failing to ensure facility surfaces are cleaned, and failing to ensure the presence of a certified food handler, according to the inspection report.
Some items were corrected during the inspection, food handler education was carried out and food handler certification was mandated. The restaurant was re-inspected April 12 and a ticket for failing to provide handwashing stations was issued.
Another Markham restaurant, Hai Tang Cafe at 8-9 - 38 Buttonfield Rd., when inspected April 11 was found not in compliance with the food handler washing their hands to prevent contamination, which was corrected during the inspection, and cleaning and maintaining equipment surfaces, for which it was charged.
South Asiyan Supermarket, at 7 - 5402 Main St. in Whitchurch-Stouffville, was inspected April 11 and found not in compliance of a number of items. According to the report, it failed to provide handwashing stations with adequate supplies, failed to protect food from adulteration, failed to ensure the floors were clean and kept in good repair, and failed to ensure the presence of a certified food handler at all times.
On-site education was carried out and a ticket was issued for failing to provide handwashing stations.
York Region inspects food establishments under the Health Protection and Promotion Act and issues charges and orders. It publicly reports the results weekly.
It said the reports guarantee the condition of the restaurants at the time of the inspection only.
