Newmarket residents have four newly improved playgrounds to enjoy.
Playgrounds at Arnhem Park, Frank Williams Park, John Georgas Parkette and Clare Salisbury Park have new structures and accessibility improvements through the use of engineered wood fibre.
The redone playgrounds at Arnhem and John Georgas are now open to the public, while Frank Williams and Clare Salisbury North will be open to the public soon after final safety inspections.
“Thank you to all community members who took time to provide their feedback at our public information centre in the spring,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said. “As part of the town’s commitment to provide our residents with beautiful, enjoyable, and safe parklands, we hope everyone has an opportunity to experience the new and accessible playground features this summer and beyond.”
The town budgeted the improvements for this year, holding a public information session in March to gather feedback for the projects. The town said the upgrades were part of its commitment to provide enjoyable and accessible parks.
Ward 2 Councillor Victor Woodhouse praised the additions to John Georgas Parkette.
“I can only say that I wish I were a kid again! What a wonderful place to play for a while,” he said on social media.
The additions also include new swing sets at Frank Williams and Clare Salisbury. Frank Williams has also received a new picnic table pad by the shade.
Clare Salisbury Park will be getting another special addition. Councillor Kelly Broome said on social media that the town will be adding a celebration bench there to honour of late crossing guard Harvey (Harvo) Williams, who served in the role for 18 years.
“I am so happy that Harvey is included,” a resident said on social media. “He was such a great person and role model for our kids growing up! He is missed.”
