*************************
Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

  • Newmarket - Georgina - Northern York Region
  • Pickering - Oshawa - Southern Durham Region
  • Uxbridge - Beaverton - Northern Durham Region
  • Vaughan - Richmond Hill - Markham

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

Hazards:
Damaging wind gusts up to 100 km/h.
Nickel size hail possible.

Timing:
This evening.

Discussion:
Thunderstorms are expected to affect the area into this evening. The main hazard will be damaging wind gusts. There is some uncertainty as to how far east the risk of severe weather will continue.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
