Newmarket has begun the new year with another record single-day increase in COVID-19 cases, as well as its 30th virus-related fatality.

On Jan. 1, 28 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Newmarket residents, days after the previous high of 22 new cases reported Dec. 30.

A Newmarket resident is also among nine COVID-19 related deaths being reported by York Region Public Health tonight.

The 71-year-old woman passed away Dec. 30 at Southlake Regional Health Centre, after symptom onset and a positive test Dec. 22.

The case was acquired by close contact, according to regional spokesperson Patrick Casey.

To date, four Newmarket residents have died with a case acquired by close contact.

The majority of Newmarket's COVID-19 deaths are a result of cases acquired in institutional outbreaks — 21, or 70 per cent — at long-term care, retirement and group homes.

The 30 deaths represent three per cent of Newmarket's 959 cases as of Jan. 2.

The death toll in York Region has reached 368 as of Jan. 2, accounting for two per cent of its 8,678 cases.
