A 76-year-old woman is Newmarket's 40th COVID-19 fatality.

The woman passed away Wednesday, March 10 at Southlake Regional Health Centre with a case of COVID-19 acquired by local transmission, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.

She died one week after symptom onset on Wednesday, March 3, and four days after positive test results on Saturday, March 6.

Within in the same week, two other Newmarket residents passed away with COVID-19 acquired in the institutional outbreak at The Newmarket Residence.

York Region Public Health declared the 37-day outbreak closed on March 12.

Deaths account for 2 per cent of Newmarket's 1,687 cases to date, with 75 per cent linked to institutional outbreaks.

Of the 40 deaths, 24 cases were aged 80 and over, 13 were aged 65 to 79 and three were aged 55 to 64.

In York Region, the total number of deaths is 541 of 30,296 cases.
