A second resident has died with COVID-19 acquired in the virulent outbreak at a Newmarket group home.
The 65-year-old Newmarket man passed away Tuesday, March 9 at Southlake Regional Health Centre, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.
A positive test was confirmed Feb. 5, four days prior to symptom onset, following testing of all residents and staff.
A 78-year-old man was the first resident to die Wednesday, Feb. 10 in the outbreak that was declared at the community living home 37 days ago, on Feb. 3.
The outbreak began with one positive resident case, then jumped to 26 resident cases on the following day, Feb. 4, eventually spiralling to 54 of 70 residents. All the staff have also been infected, with 10 cases reported to date.
York Region Public Health, social services, paramedics services and staff from Ontario Health Team have been working with the home’s operator to support the staff and residents and limit the spread of the virus, Casey said.
Privately owned and operated by Icilda Tate, the group home is in East Gwillimbury on RR 3, however, it has Newmarket mailing address, 3248 Davis Dr., and is tracked by the public health unit as a Newmarket facility.
According to The Newmarket Residence website, the home provides 24-hour support and supervision to vulnerable adults with physical or cognitive impairments.
