A 92-year-old woman is the third resident to pass away in the COVID-19 outbreak at Newmarket Health Centre that began two months ago.

She passed away Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Eagle Street facility after being exposed to the virus in the outbreak affecting 25 of 107 residents and 27 health-care workers, according to regional spokesperson Patrick Casey.

Onset of symptoms was Friday, Dec. 4, one day after positive test results were received.

The first death of the outbreak, which was declared Nov. 7 at the facility operated by the Regional Municipality of York, was a 76-year-old man on Nov. 30.

An 83-year-old man who passed away Dec. 17 was the second resident to die with COVID-19 acquired in the outbreak at Newmarket Health Centre.

What began with a confirmed COVID-19 case in a single health-care worker at Newmarket Health Centre 60 days ago has grown to a severe outbreak.

Only essential visitors, including caregivers, are currently permitted to enter the facility that has 107 residents and employs 195 health-care workers.

Of its 1,029 total cases, 31 Newmarket residents have died with COVID-19 since the pandemic began, of which 22 were cases acquired in outbreaks in long-term care, retirement and group homes.

York Region Public Health reported five additional COVID-19 related deaths as a result of institutional outbreaks, including three residents of Chartwell Woodhaven Long-term Care Residence in Markham and two patients at Mackenzie Health hospital in Richmond Hill.

The death toll reached 377 in York Region today, which has confirmed 19,655 cases since the pandemic began.
