New Road Weather Information System Improves Safety in Aurora

The Town of Aurora has added a second Road Weather Information System (RWIS) on Elderberry Trail, just north of Bloomington. This system helps track important weather conditions and provides valuable information to the Town’s Operations staff.

The RWIS camera measures things like air temperature, wind speed, and the type and amount of precipitation. It also checks the road’s surface to see if it’s wet, dry or icy and monitors road and subsurface temperatures.

The data collected helps the Town make better decisions during bad weather. By getting real-time information about road conditions and temperatures, staff can take quicker action to manage road safety and maintenance, using resources where they’re needed most.

This new system is part of the Town’s commitment to using technology to improve services and safety for the community. The first RWIS system was installed on John West Way, north of Wellington Street, near Aurora Town Hall.
