Wildfire smoke means it is time to break out the masks again

International Safety’s Austin Ertl shares some helpful advice about preparing for all types of emergencies.

As you have probably noticed, the many wildfires burning around Ontario and Quebec are causing smoky skies across the province and even into the United States. Poor air quality is interrupting normal life for many people. I spoke with Austin Ertl, Inside Sales Representative for Newmarket’s International Safety about how we can breathe safely and why masks should be a staple in every emergency preparedness kit.

“Our roots here at International Safety are in occupational safety, but we have been able to apply our expertise to public safety as well,” says Austin. “Our team deals with respiratory and breathing protection for all types of first-responders, health care organizations, and even high heat occupations like welding, as well as for the general public.”

Breathing Easier in Poor Air Quality

The air quality index has been ranked at the highest risk in parts of the province this month and wildfire season is far from over. It is recommended to stay indoors when the air quality gets bad, but that isn’t always possible. Luckily, many of us still have some N95 masks leftover from the COVID-19 pandemic. These masks are also useful for filtering out particulates like smoke. If you must go out when the air quality is dangerously poor, it is a good idea to wear an N95 mask.

“For a fairly small expense, you can have a box of N95 masks on hand so you are prepared in case of any type of natural disaster,” says Austin. “We saw it with COVID and now we’re experiencing it again with the fires. These masks last for a long time and it is easy to keep a box in your home.”

Valve Masks Are Back on the Table

The N95 masks that we used during the pandemic were designed to keep both you and those around you safe. That’s why valved masks were not a good choice. They allow the wearer’s breath to exit the mask unfiltered. According to Austin, valved masks don’t work for pandemics, but they are a good choice if you only need to filter the air that you are breathing in.

“For poor air quality, you need to inhale through an N95 respirator, but you don’t need to exhale through one. Valved masks allow your hot exhale to exit the mask which makes them much more comfortable, especially on hot days. We carry a wide range of valved and non-valved masks so folks can choose the best type for their needs.” explains Austin.

Beyond the Emergency Kit

On top of having a well-stocked safety kit including N95 masks, there are a few additional ways

that you can prepare for unexpected emergencies. Creating an emergency plan with your family and checking in with your neighbours are both good places to start.

“There is always going to be something. Whether it is wildfires, pandemics, or extreme weather, it is important to be prepared. Take this opportunity to enroll in a first aid or CPR course. It is not just about protecting yourself, but it is also about taking care of each other,” Austin says.
