’Tis the season for delicious comfort food in a cozy pub, and NewmarketToday readers have chosen the place for you.
The Crow’s Nest Pub and Restaurant opened its doors in 1999, with current owner Shane Eadie buying it in 2018 after working as the general manager for 11 years.
The Crow’s Nest describes itself as an authentic British pub, and it has the cozy atmosphere to back that up. But there are no big TVs and no pounding music— their real focus is on putting out great food. “We’re not a sports bar,” says Shane. “I like a nice, quiet place for people to hang out and enjoy.”
The Crow’s Nest’s kitchen serves up classics like liver and onions (which is actually their second-most sold item), fish and chips, and curries. They also have homemade pub pies, which the chef comes up with weekly or sometimes even daily. Past pub pies on the menu have included curry, steak and peppers, and chicken and mushroom. There are also homemade pastas that switch up regularly, their famous prime rib on Sundays, and pork back ribs on Thursdays and Saturdays, which Shane describes as “the best ribs you could ever get.”
The menu is a big draw for guests, even causing lineups for a weekday lunch hour at times. And it’s not just locals that flock to the pub. Shane and his team regularly meet people who have heard about them and made the drive from Barrie, Richmond Hill, Markham, Toronto, and more. “People come from all over the place and that’s really nice,” says Shane.
The Crow’s Nest also regularly holds events, which you can find at their website. The mailing list signup is also on there, which will make you a “crow member.” Crow members receive emails with early access to event tickets. On Monday, November 18th, the pub is holding a scotch tasting event. The tasting will be paired with a four-course meal and there will be a bagpiper from 6:30-9:30PM. The evening is nearly sold out of its 80 tickets, but there are always more events happening, including tastings of wine, beer, and tequila.
The upper room of the pub holds up to 50 people and is available for private event rentals. It has hosted small weddings, birthday parties, receptions, and more. Interested parties can inquire via The Crow’s Nest’s website.
Shane is a hands-on business owner, working hard to ensure that his presence and care is felt by both staff and guests. “I believe to have a successful restaurant, I have to be 100% involved daily,” says Shane.
This approach has meant that the community knows him well, saying hi to Shane at the grocery store and around town. Knowing that his guests voted the pub a Reader Favourite means a lot to the owner, and shows him that he’s achieving what he set out to achieve.
“The Crow’s Nest is like a home away from home. It’s cozy, you feel like you’re in your living room,” says Shane.
“I want to thank them for being a guest at our home."
