UPDATE: 9:15 a.m.:
Police received multiple calls from citizens about the sounds of screaming and a loud disturbance occurring in an apartment on Crowder Boulevard Thursday, Dec. 7 at 10:15 p.m., according to a York Regional Police news release.
During an interaction with a man in the building’s stairwell, he was shot and pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.
An adult woman at the scene was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
While the province’s SIU was notified and has invoked its mandate, York Regional Police #1 District criminal investigation bureau is conducting a parallel investigation, police said.
Any witness who has not yet spoken with an investigator, or anyone who has information about the incident or a video recording from the area, is urged to contact investigators as soon as possible.

UPDATE, 7:15 a.m.:
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a York Regional Police officer fatally shot a 37-year-old man during a call for a domestic disturbance last night in Newmarket.
According to preliminary information released by the SIU, officers responded to the call at about 10:30 p.m. to an apartment on Crowder Boulevard, in the area of Leslie and Gorham streets.
Officers located the man in a stairwell of the apartment building and during an interaction, the man was shot by police.
Paramedics responded and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 9.
One subject official and two witness officials have been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers, as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) along with York Regional Police are investigating a scene at 351 Crowder Blvd. in Newmarket.
Multiple police vehicles were in the parking lot of the Heritage East apartment building past 11:30 p.m. Dec. 7. York Regional Police confirmed the SIU — a civilian agency that investigates cases involving law enforcement where someone dies, is injured seriously, alleges sexual assault or is shot at — is investigating the matter.
Police said there is no threat to public safety at this time, and more information will be released later in the morning.
A York Region Paramedic Services vehicle was also on the scene.
