Shots were fired near the main entrance of a Richmond Hill elementary school at some time over the long weekend, York Regional Police say.

Police responded to a report of damage at the school, which is closed to students for the summer, at 16th and Bayview avenues on Tuesday, July 2 at about 6:30 a.m., according to a news release. Officers found evidence of gun shots at the entrance.

While there is a daycare on the other side of the entrance, based on the location of the bullet casings, police believe that the school was the intended target.

Police are appealing to the public to assist in determining when this incident occurred. Investigators are seeking witnesses who were in the area at the time, or may have heard loud bangs not consistent with Canada Day fireworks. Investigators are also seeking any video surveillance from the area or anyone who may have captured dashcam video of roadways in the area.
