One person is dead and another was injured Friday morning when suspects carried out a "brazen" double shooting inside a suburban Markham, Ont., home, police said, a residence they say had been repeatedly targeted in recent years.

The home in the city's northeast had been shot at five times since 2018, and three times last year alone, police said. It was the subject of a community town hall.

But that violence appeared to hit a concerning new level on Friday morning.

"It is shocking and brazen that something like this would happen in a residential neighbourhood," said Const. Kevin Nebrija, a York Regional Police spokesperson.

Officers were called at around 6:30 a.m. to a shooting on Solace Road.

Police said they found two adults with gunshot wounds inside, and they were rushed to hospital. They said one person has since died and the other has serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A dog was also fatally shot, they said.

Police said two suspects fled the scene in a four-door Acura TLX.

"This house has been targeted multiple times in the past. What makes this incident concerning, though, is that the shooting occurred within the home, whereas previous incidents occurred with shots being fired at the home from a distance," said Nebrija.

Police said the house was shot at once in February 2024 and twice the next month. Shortly after that, police held a town hall meeting with residents, Nebrija said.

No arrests have been made in those previous cases. Police did not offer any details about what might have motivated the shootings.

They did not immediately release any details about the victims.
