York Regional Police has confirmed the identity of a man found dead inside a restaurant that was set on fire in King Township.
The Office of the Chief Coroner positively identified the deceased as Bassam Mhaidat, 22, of Mississauga on Feb. 25, according to a news release.
On Sunday, Feb. 16, shortly before 3 a.m., police attended a restaurant in the area of Highway 27 and King Road for reports of a fire. When emergency services arrived, the premise was fully engulfed in flames. Fire crews extinguished the fire and located a body inside.
Saeed Alshoubaki, 22, of Mississauga, is charged with manslaughter and arson, police said.
The investigation is ongoing and investigators are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to check their security cameras or dashcam footage.
