Four people have been charged in separate fatal collisions between September 2024 and January 2025, leading to a call for increased road safety from York Regional Police.
Since the last public appeal for more diligent operation of motor vehicles, police have charged four more drivers involved in fatal collisions.
On Sept. 10, 2024, an 84-year-old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Wellington Street East and Yonge Street in Aurora. The victim was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Yangyang Liu, 47, of Vaughan, was charged with dangerous operation causing death
On Dec. 15, 2024, a two-vehicle collision between an SUV and a pickup truck in the area of Jane Street and Auto Vaughan Drive resulted in the death of an 87-year-old female driver. All five occupants of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
Anthony Buffone, 46, of Mississauga, was charged with two counts of dangerous operation causing death and dangerous operations causing bodily harm.
Three days later, a two-vehicle collision in the area of Highway 27 and Rutherford Road resulted in the death of a 64-year-old male driver.
An 18-year-old, who was 17 at the time of the incident, from Bolton was charged with dangerous operation causing death.
On Jan. 12, a two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Dufferin Street. The passenger of the vehicle, an 85-year-old woman from Richmond Hill, was transported to hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
Asad Wadia, 36, of Vaughan, was charged with dangerous operation causing death.
Police said that many collisions are preventable and that the public can take steps toward mitigating collisions and ensuring that York Region roadways remain safe for all users.
These include monitoring your speed, wearing a seatbelt, refraining from driving while impaired and being an attentive driver.
