York Regional Police is investigating a series of seven commercial break-ins that occurred overnight in Newmarket Dec. 16 to 17.

Police confirmed that seven commercial break-ins were reported overnight in the area of Davis Drive and Leslie Street. Investigators believe they were committed by the same suspects. All were reported to involve front door/window glass being broken to provide entry.

PiCo Pizza Bar, at 27 Harry Walker Pkwy S. plaza, was one of the places hit. Manager Kevin Dias said although they do not keep cash on site, and nothing was taken, there was still damage.

“It was not a pleasant experience,” Dias said. “That actually slowed up the company operations and people lose their working hours.”

Newmarket has had incidents of serialized break-and-enters occurring in recent months. Several experienced break-and-enters along Davis Drive in the summer. Police also charged a man with 25 counts of break-and-enter in November following a string of them in Newmarket and Aurora.

Media relations officer Const. James Dickson said investigators are still working to determine how many people are involved and to obtain description of a suspect or vehicle. A full list of items stolen is also being worked on.

Dias said customers and nearby stores have been asking about the incident, and they are co-operating with police on the investigation.

“All of them are just talking about what’s going on and they’re also amazed. I haven’t ever seen something like that happen in the last couple of years,” Dias said. “Everyone is amazed by it …(The break-in), it’s a bad experience, but we’re working on it.”
