Two guns have been seized and four people are facing numerous charges in two separate impaired investigations on New Year’s Eve in Vaughan.
At a RIDE spot check at Highway 7 West and Bowes Road on Dec. 31, officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis in a black Nissan with two men and one woman at about 9 p.m., according to York Regional Police.
Two large bags of suspected cannabis, as well as smaller plastic bags of cannabis, a scale and a black satchel with a handgun inside were found in a search of the vehicle, police said.
The firearm, believed to be a 3-D printed ghost gun, was fully loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition and had no serial number on it, and several loose .22 calibre rounds were also in the bag, police said.
Phillisha Franklyn, 20, Isaac Lambfal Solomon Scott, 19, and Anferney Manuel Ventura Reyes, 20, all of Hamilton, are charged with various firearms offences, as well possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution.
Franklyn was on bail for unrelated charges at the time of this offence and has also been charged with fail to comply with undertaking, police said.
Approximately six hours later, on Jan. 1, police responded to a driver asleep at the wheel in the left turn lane on Rutherford Road at Jane Street. When police arrived, they found a male driver passed out behind the wheel. The vehicle was blocked to prevent the driver from driving away.
When officers were eventually able to wake the driver, he put the vehicle in drive and struck one of the cruisers, police said.
An open bottle of alcohol was found on the passenger seat, police said. As they searched the driver, they found a loaded handgun in the waistband of his pants. They also seized a quantity of drugs, suspected to be fentanyl.
Christian Marius Kamukuny, 23, of Brampton is charged with various firearms offences, including possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, impaired operation and possession for the purpose of trafficking, police said.
At the time of his arrest, Kamukuny was on a lifetime firearms prohibition, police said.
