In Loving Memory of Than Va (1959–2025)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Than Va on January 26th, 2025, at the age of 65 after a year-long battle with cancer. Than was a devoted wife, loving mother, and beloved grandmother who touched the hearts of everyone she met. She was surrounded by the love of her family as she peacefully left this world, leaving behind her husband, Kosal; her daughters, Sotheavy (Souki) and Thary (Tim); and her six beloved grandchildren: Tayden, Destiny, Kaierra, Taurielle, Noelle, and Elias.

Than was born in Koy Maeng, Battambang, Cambodia, on November 10th, 1959. She immigrated to Canada in 1985, seeking a better life for her family and to escape the Khmer Rouge genocide. In her new home, she quickly embraced the opportunities and challenges of life, always with a kind heart and an unwavering determination to provide for her loved ones.

She was known for her incredible talents in the kitchen, where she would cook and bake with love, creating dishes that were as much about nourishment as they were about bringing people together. Whether preparing traditional Cambodian meals or trying new recipes, her culinary creations were always a source of joy for her family. But Than’s talents didn’t stop there. She was also an expert seamstress, a passionate knitter, and loved gardening—her energy and joy were contagious to all who knew her.

What truly defined Than was her kindness and selflessness. She was a woman who never sought conflict and always put others before herself. Her nurturing nature made her the most incredible mother and grandmother, providing endless love, support, and wisdom to those around her. Her family was everything to her, and she cherished each moment spent with them.

Than’s legacy is one of love, humility, and strength. She was a true example of resilience, having built a life from the ground up and always finding ways to bring light into the lives of those she loved. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, who will forever carry her love and lessons with them.

May she rest in peace, and may her spirit continue to guide and comfort those she left behind.
