March 16th, 1939 - November 23rd, 2024

Passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of family and friends at Eagle Terrace long-term care residence on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024 at 85 years of age.

Beloved mother of Adrienne (Jonathan), Jay (Denise) and Irene (David) and proud grandmother of Alan, Zachary (Yuki), Samatha and Molly. Sister of Charlie (Jill), Stephen, Theresa and Jack (Joy) and daughter to the late Danielle Pachnieski and Stephen Michalek. She is predeceased by her infant twin sister, Adrienne, for whom her eldest is named.

Marie was an incredible and caring nurse who began her training at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal at the age of 16. Over the years, she worked in complex surgeries and the ER, but most enjoyed her work at Bloorview Children’s Hospital as well as with children in the home with their families. Her own home was filled with music, friends, and laughter even in the toughest of times. Her empathy, humour and warmth made an impression on all those whose path she crossed to her very last days, managing to thank those caring for her as long as she could still speak.

From Nanticoke, where she and her twin were born, to Granby, Quebec and then Montreal, to Boston and then the New York Bronx, to Willowdale, Mississauga, and finally Newmarket, she was a quietly brave woman who forged her own way before it was fashionable to do so. She expressed her artistry through knitting and sewing until arthritis made it unpleasant, and then enjoyed painting with her community, leaving many keepsakes for us to treasure. She was beloved by everyone lucky enough to know her.

The family would like to thank all of the tireless, wonderful staff at Eagle Terrace, as well as Kerri, Theresa, Emma, Rana and Marg.
