Sally was a registered nurse, midwife, and world traveler with a natural flair for interior design – always preferring bright colours to beige and gray. Born in Southhampton, England to Wing Commander Henry A.C. Stratton and Pearl Stratton, Sally completed her nursing training at the Royal Masonic Hospital in London, where she fell in love with the excitement and cosmopolitan atmosphere of the big city. Sally later travelled and worked in Bermuda and Australia, gaining extra training in midwifery so that she could work with her favourite humans – babies.
In Canada, Sally worked as a nurse and childbirth educator in Montreal (Royal Victoria Hospital and Catherine Booth Hospital), where she met her husband-to-be, and in Ottawa and Toronto. She ended her career in health care in the Labour and Delivery Ward at Humber Memorial Hospital in Toronto in 1997.
In retirement, Sally delighted at hearing about the spirited and/or naughty adventures of her four grandchildren – Nathan and Annaka by James and Alison King – Olive and Sibyl by Jessica King and Ben Zanetti. She was a patient, loving, and observant mother and grandmother, feeling the challenges and joys of each of her “babies” deeply, despite a calm exterior and general parenting policy of non-interference.
Sally leaves behind her husband of 52 years, Malcolm King, children James (Alison), and Jessica (Ben Zanetti), and four grandchildren, as well as family and friends in England and Australia. We will all miss her kindness and gentle humour.
